Besiktas delivered a commanding 4-1 win over Marseille at Vodafone Park, in a clash corresponding to the first matchday of the UEFA Europa League league phase. The Turkish side, superior for much of the match, sealed a victory that puts them in the upper reaches of the overall standings.
How the match went
Besiktas came out determined to dictate terms from the start and found reward quickly. Despite an early warning with a yellow card for Emmanuel Agbadou just moments into the match, the home side didn't lose their composure and were celebrating the opening goal by the 15th minute. Marseille, however, didn't fall behind and responded before the half-hour mark, leaving a first half level on the scoreboard but with Besiktas holding the initiative in play.

Our take
In our view, Besiktas left a solid and convincing impression on their European debut of the season. Their ability to respond after Marseille's temporary equalizer, along with the effectiveness shown in the key moments of the second half, speaks of a team with the credentials to fight near the top in this league phase.
Marseille, for their part, had a respectable first half in which they managed to level the play with Abdallah's goal, but the second half exposed defensive shortcomings that the Turkish side knew how to exploit without mercy. The injuries to Cornelius and Cerny added an extra layer of drama to a match that, overall, delivered more than expected in terms of intensity and variety.
In our reading, this result leaves Besiktas well positioned to dream of the top spots in the Europa League, while Marseille will need to fix their defensive errors if they don't want to find themselves in trouble early on in a competition as demanding as this one.
