Rayo Vallecano picked up a golden three points at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque by beating Espanyol 2-1, in a match that began with a show of authority from the home side and ended with nerves in the closing stages. Goals from Álvaro García and Adrià Pedrosa, both in the first half, gave the Vallecas side the advantage, and they held on despite Roberto Fernández's goal and a second half in which the visitors dominated more, to claim the win.

In our view, Rayo Vallecano knew how to make the most of their best start to a match in recent weeks, something they had been lacking in previous fixtures, as reflected by recent results marked by heavy defeats to sides like Real Madrid and Barcelona. Their ruthlessness in the opening 26 minutes proved decisive in holding onto the result despite the difficulties that followed.
Espanyol, on the other hand, leave the impression of a team that reacts too late. The halftime changes had an impact on the scoreline, but the early deficit and the subsequent stoppage-time red card limited their chances of taking anything from the match, despite outshooting their rivals and creating clearer chances. This match confirms that, although the playing statistics may favor one team, clinical finishing in key moments remains the decisive factor in LaLiga.
